Four make-up games from recent postponements start the week on Tuesday and Wednesday leading up to Round 23 on Thursday and Friday. It's a particularly huge week for in-form UNICS Kazan, which travels to Real Madrid on Tuesday and hosts CSKA Moscow three days later. Round 23 tips off on Thursday with a key battle in the race for the playoffs. Zenit claimed an impressive 79-90 win at Efes earlier in the season behind outstanding shooting percentages – 64.5% from two-point range and 45.2% from deep – and will need similar efficiency to overcome the champs again. January 23, 2022 - Round 22 MVP: Ante Zizic, Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv

ante zizicWith Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv in a dire need of a win to snap its eight-game losing streak, center Ante Zizic stepped up to lead the team to an 84-69 win over the visiting Olympiacos Piraeus and earn the MVP of Round 22 honor in the process. Zizic fell a point shy of his career-best scoring night, finishing this contest with a game-high 23 points on 10-for-12 two-point shooting. The Maccabi big man also collected 6 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block and an assist, while drawing 4 personal fouls to match his career-high performance index rating of 33. Zizic is the first Maccabi player not named Scottie Wilbekin to win this award in three years. Coincidentally, his first MVP honor came 16 years after his older brother Andrija won his only such award playing for Olympiacos in Tel Aviv against Maccabi on January 5, 2006. They become the second pair of brothers, after Ksystof and Darjus Lavrinovic, to both earn MVP of the Round. Round 22's next-best PIRs of 30 each belonged to guards Maodo Lo of ALBA Berlin and Wade Baldwin of Bitci Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz. Lo's 21 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists weren't enough to prevent ALBA from losing at home, 74-89, to Real Madrid. Read more here.

When fans and pundits turn their thoughts to potential winners of this season's Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, the usual suspects are generally top of the list. Current leader and last season's runner-up FC Barcelona will surely present a strong challenge, as will fellow Spanish giant Real Madrid; CSKA Moscow, as always, will be there or thereabouts, along with another of last May's Final Four contestants, AX Armani Exchange Milan; reigning champion Anadolu Efes Istanbul surely also possesses the potential to shrug off its current lowly position and mount a serious title charge, and European heavyweight Olympiacos Piraeus has shown solid consistency throughout the season. billy baronBilly Baron had a big night against his former team to lead Zenit St Petersburg over Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade on Thursday night and in doing so earned MVP of the Round honors for the first time in his career. Baron erupted for 25 points on 5-of-9 three-point shooting and dished 6 assists in a 76-80 victory in the Serbian capital. He also had 4 rebounds, 1 steal and drew 5 fouls in compiling a PIR of 30, which was the highest among all players in winning teams in Round 18. The scoring and PIR totals were both the second-highest of Baron’s EuroLeague career. The highest PIR of the round was Scottie Wilbekin’s 31 for Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv in an 82-76 loss at AS Monaco. Wilbekin scored 31 points and dished 4 assists for the Israeli champs. John Brown III racked up a PIR of 28 in UNICS Kazan’s 75-67 victory over Anadolu Efes Istanbul. Brown shined with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 5 steals. Completing the list of top performers for the round were Bitci Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz teammates Rokas Giedraitis and Steven Enoch with 25 each. Giedraitis scored 20 and Enoch posted a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds in their 94-75 shellacking of FC Barcelona. Read more here.

The closing action of 2021 in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, with the regular season entering its second half as Round 18 roars into life. For the second week in a row, the round will start one day early – on Wednesday – to accommodate the end-of-year holidays, although two games originally scheduled for the same night have been postponed due to the current COVID-19 wave. wade baldwinWade Baldwin IV of Bitci Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz earned Round 17 MVP honors with a stellar performance in a winning effort. Baldwin led Baskonia to a 76-81 road victory against one of his former teams, FC Bayern Munich, with a career-high 30 points. He made 7 of 11 two-pointers, 4 of 7 three-pointers and all 4 of his free-throw attempts as well as 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 4 fouls drawn for a PIR of 33. Baldwin earned MVP of the Round honors for the second time in his career; his first came with Bayern in Round 17 of the 2020-21 campaign. Two more players - Lorenzo Brown of UNICS Kazan and Achille Polonara of Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul - also had PIRs of 33 but their teams registered respective losses against FC Barcelona and LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne. Brown tallied 27 points, 7 rebounds, 9 assists and 7 fouls drawn against Barcelona. Polonara posted a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds against ASVEL. he made 6 of 8 two-pointers and 2 of 4 shots from downtown. The Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season reaches its midway point with Round 17, taking place a day earlier than usual – on Wednesday and Thursday – due to end-of-year holidays in several corners of Europe. It all added up to a performance index rating of 37, the highest among all players in Round 16, good for the 12th MVP of the Round honor of his career. Behind him came Maodo Lo of ALBA Berlin, whose career highs of 26 points and 34 PIR were not enough to avoid a 90-93 home loss to CSKA Moscow. Round 16's third-best PIR, 32, belonged to FC Barcelona forward Nikola Mirotic who collected 20 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal in an 82-85 road win over Panathinaikos OPAP Athens. The next-best performance came from Maccabi center Ante Zizic, who accumulated a 31 PIR in his team's loss against Efes, scoring 23 points to go with 6 rebounds and 2 blocks. And the fifth-best performance of the round belonged to Nando De Colo, who posted a 26 PIR in leading Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul to a 75-53 win over Bitci Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz with 17 points, 7 assists and 6 steals. Micic amassed 24 points on 5-for-8 two-point, 3-for-5 three-point and 5-for-5 free throw shooting in Efes's 87-72 home victory against Bitci Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz. He added 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 6 fouls drawn. James had a double-double of 20 points and 14 assists -- his new career high -- in Monaco's 98-107 overtime road win against Zalgiris Kaunas. James hit 6 of 11 two-pointers and 5 of 6 three-pointers while adding 5 rebounds and 7 fouls drawn. Next came Toko Shengelia of CSKA Moscow, whose PIR of 27, based on 20 points and 6 rebounds, couldn't prevent his team's 67-88 home loss against UNICS Kazan. In the same game, UNICS forward Mario Hezonja combined 18 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals for a PIR of 26. nikola miroticNikola Mirotic stepped up with a career-best performance against his former team in one of basketball's greatest rivalries on Friday, leading FC Barcelona to a 93-80 win over Real Madrid to earn the MVP honor of Round 14. Mirotic set a new career-high with a performance index rating of 39 and tied his career best in scoring with 31 points. In 29 minutes on the floor, Mirotic went 4-for-4 on two-pointers, 3-for-6 on triples and 14-for-15 at the free throw line. He completed a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds to go with 1 assist and 9 drawn fouls. This is Mirotic's eighth MVP of the Round honor and second this season. Following in second place was Nikola Milutinov, who ruled inside in CSKA Moscow's 51-73 win at Zalgiris Kaunas. His 36 PIR, the second-best of his career, came with 19 points on 8-for-9 two-point shooting and 12 rebounds. He also had a steal and a block, and 5 drawn fouls, in 26 minutes. Next, with a PIR of 35, came Jan Vesely who starred as Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul went on the road to beat Zenit St Petersburg 80-86. El Clasico takes center stage in Round 14 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season with FC Barcelona hosting Real Madrid for a game which is also a battle for first place. The first Clasico of the season has the added significance of being a battle for first place as co-leader FC Barcelona (11-2) welcomes archrival Real Madrid (11-2) on Friday night. The two Spanish giants are in fine form with Barca grabbing an overtime win at Anadolu Efes Istanbul last week in a rematch of the 2021 championship game, while Real held its nerve to claim a last-second 72-70 victory over Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv and make it six wins in a row. Vezenkov scored 11 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. He was 3-for-3 on two-pointers, 3-for-7 on threes, and made all 7 free throws he tried. Vezenkov also pulled down 7 rebounds and had a career-high 5 steals to go with 3 assists and 1 block. His performance index rating of 36 was the highest of Round 13 and of any Olympiacos player this season. The round's next-best PIR belonged to AS Monaco guard Mike James, who posted an index rating of 33 in his team's 96-86 loss to host Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul. James had 31 points, 4 assists, 4 steals, 2 rebounds and 9 drawn fouls. In that same game, Fenerbahce center Jan Vesely had a PIR of 32, collecting 20 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Following them with an index rating of 31 was Anadolu Efes Istanbul guard Vasilije Micic, who compiled 26 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in a 93-95 overtime home loss to FC Barcelona. walter tavaresLooking down on the competition is normal for Walter Tavares, one of the tallest players in Turkish Airlines EuroLeague history. The 2.20-meter center, Euroleague Basketball's choice for MVP of November, now has Real Madrid enjoying the view from the top, too. At the end of October, Real was in the middle of nine teams who had won between four and six games. A month later, Real now shares first place at 10-2 with archrival FC Barcelona, both sitting two victories clear of the pack barely 10 days ahead of their first El Clįsico of the season. Tavares played a central role in Real's stellar November surge. He posted performance index ratings of 13 or more in all five victories, ultimately leading Real for the month in total PIR (90), rebounds (35) and blocks (9). He also scored the team's second-most points (56) while hardly missing any shots all month long, finding the bottom of the basket in 31 of his 40 attempts – all in less than 25 minutes per game. william howardWilliam Howard of LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne will never forget his Round 12 performance against AS Monaco. Howard led ASVEL to a thrilling 84-85 victory, burying the game-winning shot from almost midcourt and earning the Round 12 MVP honor in the process. Howard finished the game with career highs of 23 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals and a performance index rating of 33 that was the highest among all EuroLeague players this round. He was also near-perfect while shooting in 3 of 5 two-pointers, 5 of 5 triples and 2 of 4 free throws. He topped it all off with what was arguably one of the most spectacular game-winning shots in competition history to claim the MVP of the Round honor for the first time in his EuroLeague career. Georgios Papagiannis of Panathinaikos OPAP Athens followed with a PIR of 31, his new career-high, in a 70-64 home win over Zenit St Petersburg. Papagiannis tied his personal best with 18 points, making 8-of-9 two points shots, and also posted 13 rebounds and 4 blocks, both of them the second-best totals of his career. One of the most passionate club rivalries in world basketball, the Istanbul derby, takes the stage for Thursday's Game of the Week with much still to be learned this season about two protagonists who've had an outsized influence on Turkish Airlines EuroLeague in recent years. For the first time in six seasons under the EuroLeague's round-robin format, neither host Fenerbache Beko Istanbul nor visiting champions Anadolu Efes Istanbul occupy an eventual playoff position in the standings at the one-third mark on the 34-game calendar. Brown led UNICS to an 85-71 home victory against ALBA Berlin with a PIR of 31. He finished the game with 21 points on 7-of-11 two-pointers, 2-of-4 three-pointers and 1-of-1 free throws, tying his career high with 9 assists, along with 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 fouls drawn. It was the first MVP of the Round award in his career, and he became the fifth UNICS players to earn this honor, after Vladimir Veremeenko, D'Or Fischer, Keith Langford - who did it three times in a UNICS jersey - and Latavious Williams, the last UNICS player to achieve it in 2017. Elsewhere, Kostas Sloukas of Olympiacos Piraeus had a PIR of 29 in his team's home victory against Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv. Sloukas finished the game with 18 points on 8-of-8 free throws, adding 3 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and 9 fouls drawn. Nicolas Laprovittola of FC Barcelona and Mario Hezonja of UNICS each had a PIR of 28 in Round 11. Wilbekin set a career-high and tied a club record with 37 points. He made 7 of his 10 two-point shots, 6 of 12 shots from downtown and 5 of 6 free throws. Wilbekin also dished 8 assists, swiped 2 steals and drew 4 fouls in compiling a performance index rating of 37, which was the highest of any player in the round. It marks the third MVP of the round in Wilbekin’s career and his second this season. Sharing the runner-up spot for Round 10 were Rodrigue Beaubois of Anadolu Efes Istanbul and Jordan Loyd of Zenit St Petersburg, both with PIRs of 33. Beaubois scored a career-high 29 points on 7-of-10 three-point shooting in an 88-69 victory over Olympiacos Piraeus. Even in his worst game of October, the sole one among seven in which his performance index rating dipped to single digits, Mirotic was the hero, making a buzzer-beater in traffic to seize the win. Otherwise, he was as solid as solid gets, leading Barca in scoring and PIR in three more victories and ranking second in one or the other category for the team's remaining two wins. This is the third MVP of the Round honor in six EuroLeague seasons for Clyburn, whose injured teammate Tornike Shengelia earned a pair earlier in this one. The wait is over. The 2021-22 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season is set to start with 18 teams fighting for the continental crown. To get there, the eventual champion must first survive the regular season – a round-robin, 34-game group stage. The best eight teams will advance to the EuroLeague Playoffs, where the battles will be even harder. Fans will be back in the stands, which makes everything better!
