How
Jordan’s Return To Clippers Affects NBA Futures
As they say: until the ink has dried, nothing
is for certain. The Dallas Mavericks found that out the hard way with
center DeAndre Jordan, who spurned them at the last minute to return to
the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Mavericks, who were at one point deemed to be in the neighborhood
of 20/1 assuming the acquisition of Jordan, now have dropped into the
vicinity of 50/1. They’ve had a rough offseason and have very minimal
pieces left on the roster. Wesley Matthews but he’s returning from an
ACL injury and aside from him, the Mavs are looking at a core that
involves an over-the-hill Dirk Nowitzki, Chandler Parsons, Raymond
Felton and Devin Harris. Remember, the Mavs lost in the first round of
the 2015 NBA Playoffs and have seemingly regressed, losing center Tyson
Chandler to the Phoenix Suns and Al-Farouq Aminu to the Portland Trail
Blazers.
As for the Clippers, they were deemed to be having a
positive offseason with the additions of Lance Stephenson and Paul
Pierce. And last year’s first-round pick, C.J. Wilcox, had a really
nice start to Summer League. Remember, this is a team that won 56 games
last season and was a piece or two away from being a title contender.
It looks like they got those pieces…but all would have been for not
without Jordan back. Last night, a slew of Clippers players and
management flew to his house and convinced him to stay and as soon as
midnight struck, he re-signed. As a result, the Clippers are in the
neighborhood of 15/1 on the NBA betting lines to win next year’s
championship as only the Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs, Golden
State Warriors and Oklahoma City Thunder are bigger favorites.
