  Matjaz Smodis decided to retire


matjaz smodisMatjaz Smodis at age 33, finished its career in great style. He played for Krka Novo Mesto (team from his hometown) and won title in Slovenian Championship.

Beside this, he was named as MVP of the Playoffs Finals series. Great end of career for one of the players who left significant impact on European Basketball in last decade.

In his outstanding career he played for several teams. He started with Krka Novo Mesto, than played for Virtus Bologna, Climamio Bologna, CSKA Moscow, Cedevita Zagreb.

There are numerous awards and accomplishments he received in his career. 16 domestic Championships, three times Euroleague Champion, three times Euroleague runner-up, any many more.


Decision to finish his career with team from his childhood was great. He helped a lot to Krka Novo Mesto to win its fourth consecutive title in Slovenian Championship.

Final series against Union Olimpija was tough, but Krka won in Game 4 and grabbed title. Matjaz Smodis said after game: "Game 3 loss was a wake-up call for us. But we knew if we play tougher, harder, and show some teeth, it will be difficult for Olimpija to beat us."

After he scored 21 points and led Krka to new trophy he added: "Thanks to all the fans, and all the people at the club, for an ideal end of a long and successful career."
