October 12, 2011 - Ambitious Zagreb still on the waiting list
The
Euroleague picture from recent seasons slightly changed this year, when
Zagreb qualified for the top European competition instead of Cibona.
But the newcomer has problems in the opening rounds of ABA League. A
defeat against Partizan in the first round was painful for the whole
team since Partizan almost reached the 100 point mark while Zagreb
bagged only 65 points but after another defeat, this time against
Hemofarm on the road, the Croatian team is among few teams in the
regional league, which are still striving for a victory. Read more here.
October 9, 2011 - ABA Adriatic League, Regular Season, Game 1
The
Turkish Airlines Euroleague teams of the Adriatic League fared well in
their respective openers with only KK Zagreb losing, but that loss
coming against another Euroleague side, Partizan mt:s. The league
leader through the opening weekend is Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv, which
is 3-0 thanks to having several games moved up in its schedule. Maccabi
beat Krka Novo Mesto and Zlatorog Lasko each by double figures in
Slovenia and then took Cibona 97-81 in the home opener. All-Euroleague
center Sofoklis Schortsanitis averaged 15.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and a
block in the wins, while point guard Jordan Farmar accounted for 12
points and 4.7 assists. Read more here.
October 4, 2011 - Maccabi dominant in the opening games of ABA League
The ABA League officially started with two games
played in Slovenia on Saturday and Monday with Maccabi being the main
protagonist. The Israelian champ was too strong for both Slovenian
teams, first it defeated Krka on Friday and than Zlatorog on Monday.
Krka, which is the 2011 Eurochallenge champion, was not able to compete
with one of the strongest European teams already from the first minute
of the game and it was not at all seen that Maccabi was without the
main coach David Blatt for most of the practicing period because of his
obligations with the Russian national team. Read more here.
October 1, 2011 - Round 1 preview
It is eight years since Maccabi played in the
regional league final against Zadar, which at that time won its first
and so far the last trophy in the competition. This year the Israelian
champion is returning to the ABA League and has the honor to play the
inaugural game against Krka on Saturday. Because of the distance
between Israel and all countries ABA League teams come from the
agreement was reached according to which Maccabi will have a special
schedule and will therefore play three games already in the first week:
against Krka, Zlatorog and Cibona. Other ABA League teams will start
the season accoring to the schedule, that is on October 8th and 9th.
