December 27, 2010 - Sportingbet December MVP: Dimitris Diamantidis, Panathinaikos
|
|
|
Over
the past several seasons, Panathinaikos playmaker Dimitris Diamantidis
has certainly established himself as one of the elite point guards in
basketball with his play on both sides of the ball. His personal trophy
case is packed with individual and team awards from domestic, European
and world competitions. Despite his rich history, the 30-year-old
Diamantidis is in the midst of what may be his best season yet and
after leading an injury-stricken Panathinaikos to first place in
Turkish Airlines Euroleague Group D, he was selected as Euroleague
Basketball's choice as Sportingbet MVP for December. In six previous
seasons with the Greens, Diamantidis was never known for his numbers.

December 24, 2010 - Sportingbet Week 10 MVP: Keith Langford, BC Khimki Moscow Region
|

|
Keith
Langford led BC Khimki Moscow Region to a dramatic 93-89 overtime
victory over Zalgiris in his final Turkish Airlines Euroleague game of
the season to earn the Sportingbet MVP honor for Week 10. Not only did
he send the game to overtime with a buzzer-beating three-pointer, but
Langford also racked up the best individual performance in the
Euroleague this season with career highs of 35 points, 8 rebounds and a
42 performance index rating. Langford made 7 of 15 two-pointers, 4 of 7
triples and 9 of 15 free throws, adding 4 assists, 2 steals and 15
fouls drawn. He played over 43 minutes – another career best – and
carried Khimki at times with 9 fourth-quarter points and 6 in overtime.

December 23, 2010 - Caja Laboral dominated in the Game of the Week
|

|
With
a commanding performance in the last regular season game, Caja Laboral
stormed into second place in Group A by overwhelming Partizan mt:s
Belgrade 87-71 at home in Vitoria, Spain on Thursday. Its third
consecutive victory let Caja Laboral finish with a 5-5 record, tied for
second place with Partizan and Zalgiris Kaunas, which had lost earlier
on Thursday. Those teams were all tied 2-2 in games against each other,
but Caja Laboral owned the better overall points difference to take
second place, while Partizan dropped to fourth. With the help of
just-signed big man Pape Sow, Caja Laboral broke open a close game just
before halftime and continued adding to the lead the rest of the way.

Electronics Valencia celebrated reaching the Turkish Airlines
Euroleague Top 16 by beating Union Olimpija 78-77 on a buzzer-beating
three-pointer by Dusko Savanovic. The finish was a true delight for the
fans at Fuente de San Luis, with the lead changing hands five times in
the final few minutes and three times in the last 38 seconds. It seemed
destined for Olimpija after Kevinn Pinkney rejected Savanovic in the
final seconds and Kenny Gregory went to the line up 1 with 1.3 seconds

9 MVP: Bo McCalebb, Montepaschi Siena

McCalebb added to his growing legacy this week with a career-best
performance in his team’s biggest game of the season to lead
Montepaschi Siena to a major victory over a rival, clinching first
place in Group C and earning Sportingbet Week 9 MVP honors in the
process. With the spotlight on in the Game of the Week, McCalebb
produced 22 points on superb shooting – 7 for 10 from the field and 8
for 8 from the line – in addition to 7 assists and 4 steals for a

Maccabi
Electra Tel Aviv completed the Top 16 picture from Group A by hanging
on to beat BC Khimki Moscow region 80-76, a result that eliminated
Khimki from Top 16 contention and promoted Partizan m:ts and Caja
Laboral to the next stage. Jeremy Pargo scored 18 and dished 4 assists
as Maccabi extended its league-best winning streak to eight games.
Khimki led by double figures in the third quarter, but Maccabi fought
back and was calm down the stretch to pick up the win. Guy Pnini added
15 points, Sofoklis Schortsanitis, who was questionable coming in,
added 13 and Doron Perkins scored 10 for Maccabi, whose 8-1 record is

61-59 winner over Prokom

A
huge thriller went down on Wednesday night in Belgrade as Partizan mt:s
survived Asseco Prokom by a single basket, 61-59, in a Group A duel.
After many lead changes during the game and leads that were never
larger than seven points, it all came down to the last play as James
Gist, who had shot for 3 of 14 from the field at that point, lifted a
winning layup that would send the Grobari fans into a frenzy. The win
allows Partizan to improve to a 5-4 record in Group A and gets closer
to the Top 16, while Asseco Prokom drops to 2-7 and is mathematically

Basketball has announced that tickets for the 2011 TURKISH AIRLINES
FINAL FOUR BARCELONA will go on sale to the public on Wednesday,
December 15 at 12:00 noon CET. All tickets will be available through
the competition's official website, www.euroleague.net, to be sold by
Koobin, the official ticketing partner for the event. A certain amount
of VIP packages will also be made available through THG, while it will
also be possible through T2F to secure the ticket options in case your
team eventually qualifies for the Final Four. Any other party selling
tickets for the event is considered illegal, and therefore, fans
holding tickets from illegal sellers will not be allowed to enter the

The
six-month countdown to the 2011 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four
began on Friday with a press conference in the host city, Barcelona, to
announce the imminent start of tickets sales for the event. Euroleague
Basketball CEO Jordi Bertomeu joined Barcelona's mayor, Jordi Hereu to
promise the best Final Four yet in a city that has proven itself a
world leader time and again at hosting major international sporting

Prokom’s veteran center Ratko Varda was at his best on Thursday night,
scoring a career-high 25 points in a crucial contest against a former

the closing seconds, but as a consolation prize, Varda can take pride

Electra Tel Aviv became the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Group A
champion by thrashing Partizan mt:s 76-62 in Israel on Thursday.
Maccabi improved to 7-1 and clinched first place before anyone else in
the entire competition, earning a well-deserved top-seeded status in
the upcoming Top 16 Draw in January. Meanwhile, Partizan dropped to 4-4
but could mathematically make it to the next round if it beats Asseco
Prokom in Belgrade, Serbia next week. Lior Eliyahu led the winners with
16 points on 8-of-8 two-pointers. Jeremy Pargo added 14, Chuck Eidson
had 13 and 9 rebounds while Sofoklis Schortsianitis got 10 for Maccabi.

Jeans Milano made a major move in the Group D standings as it shut down
visiting Efes Pilsen for an 84-70 home victory on Wednesday that was
impressive in its completeness. Both teams are now 4-4, but Milano
takes over third place for having won by more points than it lost by to
Efes in their first game in Istanbul. In a game of runs on Wednesday,
Efes made a 0-10 move on either side of halftime to take over the
scoreboard, but Milano responded with a 12-0 blast and never looked

remember. Not only did he lead a 20-2 fourth-quarter charge that took
his team to an important 95-83 victory, but when all was said and done,
Washington finished the game with career highs of 27 points and a 31
performance index rating to earn Sportingbet Week 7 MVP honors.

Olimpija survived to laugh last on Thursday with a thrilling 82-75
victory over Armani Jeans Milano in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague
Game of the Week in front of a packed house at Stozice Arena. The hosts
seemed to have the game under control after a 14-0 first quarter run
and a double-digit halftime lead. Armani Jeans stormed back with a 0-13
third-quarter charge and led by as many as 9 in the fourth. However
Olimpija battled back with 10 unanswered points, tying the game at
71-71 on Damir Markota triple and going ahead for good on a
Goran Jagodnik three. Milano stayed close, but came p short in the
final minute when Jagodnik and Vlado Ilievsko iced the game from the

Khimki Moscow Region improved to 3-4 in Turkish Airlines Euroleague
Group A by downing Partizan mt:s 92-65 in Russia on Wednesday. Khimki
kept all of its Top 16 options alive and is one win away from Partizan,
that dropped to 4-3. Keith Langford paced the winners with 22 points on
9-of-12 two-pointers. Zoran Planinic added 16, Vitaly Fridzon had 11
while Raul Lopez got 10 for Khimki. James Gist led Partizan with 18
points. Nathan Jawai added 16, Curtis Jerrells had 13 in his Euroleague
debut while Dusan Kecman got 10 for the guests. Both teams played
really physical in the first quarter, combining for 15 fouls and 23

Considering
how unpredictable the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season has
been so far, perhaps it's no surprise that only one team survived the
first full month of the season undefeated. That team, Maccabi Electra
Tel Aviv, enjoyed a list of strong contributors, but none more
influential than forward Chuck Eidson, who is Euroleague Basketball's
choice as Sportingbet MVP for November. Eidson, 30, is playing his
third Euroleague season, the second in a row with Maccabi, and although
his numbers have always been good, his impact has never been greater.

off to another standout season as one of basketball’s great sixth men,
Ksistof Lavrinovic of Montepaschi Siena stood out with his best game of
the season so far on Wednesday to lead his team to an important road
win and to secure Sportingbet Week 6 MVP honors. Lavrinovic had his
highest-scoring game since opening night of last season with 23 points
plus 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 10 fouls drawn for a career-high
performance index rating of 36. His superlative effort helped Siena
beat Cholet Basket 61-70 on the road to remain tied for the best
record, 5-1, in Group C. His index rating also tied Sportingbet Week 4
MVP Berni Rodriguez of Unicaja for the best of any player this season.

mt:s Belgrade climbed into a tie for second place by beating Zalgiris
Kaunas 68-62 on Thursday night at Pionir Arena in the Serbian capital.
Partizan matched Zalgiris at 4-2 and remained just one victory behind
the Turkish Airlines Group A leader, Maccabi Electra. Dragan
Milosavljevic was the star of the game for Partizan, scoring a
season-high 19 points. The Serbian champs, who face BC Khimki next
week, got 12 points from Oliver Lafayette, while James Gist, Jan Vesely
and Nathan Jawai each added 9. Partizan jumped out with a 12-4 run at
the end of the first quarter and Zalgiris could not find its way back
despite Mirza Begic’s 19 points and DeJuan Collins’s 12 points, as the
visiting shooters never found their touch against the host’s tight
defense. Zalgiris will try to rebound next week at home against

Jeans Milano took a critical step forwards to reach the Top 16 in
Turkish Airlines Euroleague Group D by edging CSKA Moscow 71-65 at home
on Wednesday. Milano improved to 3-3 in Group D and registered its
second win against CSKA, that dropped to 1-5 and needs a major
turnaround to make it to the Top 16. Ibby Jaaber paced the winners with
18 points, including the go-ahead triple with 10.7 seconds left.
Stefano Mancinelli added 15 while Marco Mordente had 11 for Milano.

A
star turn in a historic performance for his club has earned Cholet
Basket scorer Sammy Mejia the Sportingbet MVP honor for Week 5 of the
Turkish Airlines Euroleague regular season. Mejia scored 29 points –
the most in the Euroleague this season and the most ever by a Cholet
player in Europe’s premier competition – to lead his team to an 82-78
win over previously unbeaten Fenerbahce Ulker. The victory marked the
first time Cholet has ever won three straight games in the Euroleague.
Mejia made 9 of 12 two-pointers – many of them on silky-smooth
mid-range pull-up jumpers – sank 8 of 10 free throws and added 5
rebounds and 3 assists en route to a performance index rating of 35.
His was the second-best single-game index rating this season, behind
the previous week’s Sportingbet MVP, Berni Rodriguez of Unicaja. Week
5’s second-best performances came from Lietuvos Rytas rising star Jonas

Charleroi registered its first win in Turkish Airlines Euroleague Group
B by thrashing Real Madrid 67-49 at the Spiroudome in Belgium on
Wednesday. Spirou grabbed its first Euroleague win since its last
appearance in the competition in February 2002. Meanwhile, Madrid
dropped to 3-2 and hosts mighty Olympiacos next week. The guests had a
bitter return to the Spiroudome, where it lifted the ULEB Cup trophy in
2007. Brian Greene paced the winners with 14 points. Demond Mallet and
Brent Wright each added 11 while Andre Riddick had 10 and 4 blocks for
Spirou. Mallet added 8 assists for the hosts. Felipe Reyes led Madrid
with 12 points. Riddick was Spirou's dominant force at both ends with
easy baskets and huge blocks, allowing the hosts to get a 28-14 margin

The
magic of Hala Pionir in Belgrade returned on Wednesday as host Partizan
Belgrade rallied from 8 points behind with 5 minutes left to defeat
mighty Caja Laboral 74-71 and move ahead of the visitors in the Group
A. Partizan is now 3-2 and could be tied for first place before the
week ends, while Laboral fell to 2-3. It looked like the opposite would
happen as Partizan went more than 6 minutes without a basket and
trailed 58-69 with under 5 to play. Then Kecman hit a triple to begin
his 8 unanswered points in a row to spark a rally to the finish for the
victory. James Gist hit late insurance free throws to finish with 14
points, 11 rebounds for Partizan. Nathan Jawai added 13 points, Kecman
12 - or which 10 came in the last 5 minutes - and Jan Vesely 10. Caja
Laboral was led with 17 points by Stanko Barac, but the game changed

4 MVP: Berni Rodriguez, Unicaja

Unicaja
team captain Berni Rodriguez surely won’t forget his performance on
Wednesday anytime soon. The veteran guard posted career highs with 24
points and 10 assists and was the main catalyst as his team routed
Virtus Roma 104-83. And when the week ended, he had also earned the
Sportingbet MVP honor for Week 4. Rordriguez, who is marking his 10th
Euroleague season with his hometown club, shot 6 for 9 from downtown
and also grabbed 5 rebounds and 3 steals en route to a 36 performance
index rating. That was not only the best index of his Euroleague
career, but also the best in the Euroleague so far this season.
Following in second place this week, Cibona Zagreb big man Leon
Radosevic also had a career-best game despite his team’s 71-84 loss

Panathinaikos
bounced back from last week's loss in Turkish Airlines Euroleague Group
D by downing Efes Pilsen 84-61 in Athens, Greece on Thursday night.
Panathinaikos ties with Union Olimpija for first place at 3-1, with
Efes and AJ Milano right behind at 2-2. Mike Batiste led the winners
with 17 points. Stratos Perperoglou added 12 while Romain Sato and Nick
Calathes each added 11 for Panathinaikos. Bostjan Nachbar led Efes with
13 points. Andrew Wisniewski added 12, Igor Rakocevic had 11 while
Kerem Gonlum and Ender Arslan each got 10 for the guests. An 8-0 run
that Perperoglou capped with a three-pointer gave the Greens the lead

undefeated after Wednesday!

To
the delight of 15,000 fans at sold-out Sinan Erdem Arena in Istanbul on
Wednesday, the distinction of being the Turkish Airlines Euroleague's
last undefeated team went to Fenerbahce Ulker with a commanding 81-68
home win against Montepaschi Siena, which suffered its first defeat.
The victory left FB Ulker with a 4-0 record, its best start ever in the
Euroleague, while Siena dropped to 3-1. The Euroleague's top rebounder
ever, Mirsad Turkcan, led the winners with a double-double of 13 points
and 10 boards, but he had help everywhere as eight different FB Ulker

mt:s registered its first road win in Turkish Airlines Euroleague
regular season Group A by edging Asseco Prokom Gdynia 62-69 in Poland
on Wednesday. Partizan improved to 2-2 in Group A and bounced back from
last week's home loss against Maccabi Electra. Meanwhile, Prokom
dropped to 0-4 and needs to change things right away to keep its Top 16
options alive. James Gist paced the winners with 16 points on 3-of-3
three-pointers. Nathan Jawai added 15 while Rasko Katic added 10 for

escaped with an 88-92 road victory over Caja Laboral to take a share of
first place in Turkish Airlines Group A. The visitors dominated the
glass for a 43-21 rebounding edge led by the duo of Mirza Begic and
Paulius Jankunas inside. Begic shined for 18 points, 6 rebounds and 2
blocks for a 28 performance index rating, while Jankunas tallied 12
points and 13 boards. Marty Pocius finished with 14 points, including
some clutch fourth-quarter free throws, Mantas Kalnietis also scored 14
and Travis Watson 11. Zalgiris improved to 3-1 and will share the top
spot with the winner of the Thursday showdown between BC Khimki and

3 MVP: Dimitris Diamantidis, Panathinaikos

Dimitris
Diamantidis of Panathinaikos chalked up one of the best games of his
career on Thursday to claim the Sportingbet Week 3 MVP honors.
Unfortunately for the star point guard, his effort came in a losing
cause as Union Olimpija topped the Greens 85-84 in overtime at a
sold-out Stozice Arena. The incredible atmosphere of 13,000 roaring
fans seemed to bring out some Diamantidis’s best basketball, until the
very end, when his made just the first 2 of 3 free throws, the last of
which stood to send the game to a second overtime. Diamantidis tallied
20 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 9 fouls drawn for a performance
index rating of 31 – best in the Euroleague this season. It was also
the second-best index and the tied for the third-best scoring effort in

Olimpija strengthened its hold of Group D in the Turkish Airlines
Euroleague Regular Season with an impressive 85-84 overtime win
Thursday night over Panathinaikos. The game came down to the closing
seconds when Panathinaikos guard Dimitrios Diamantidis on the line with
a chance to tie the game with 2.8 seconds remaining. But he made only
the first 2 of his 3 awarded free throws and when the third bounced
out, the sold-out crowd of 13,000 at Stozice Arena in the Slovenian
capital erupted in joy. Kevinn Pinkney led the winners with 16 points,
Kenny Gregory added 13 and Vlado Ilievski 11, including a
buzzer-beating jumper at the end of regulation that forced overtime.

knocking off Barcelona 61-69

When
the duel of undefeated teams in Group C came to an end, Fenerbahce
Ulker emerged victorious by handing defending champ Regal FC Barcelona
the first loss of the season of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague regular
season by 61-69 in Barcelona, Spain on Thursday night. It was a tight
game throughout with constant lead changes in the final quarter, but
the great defense of Fenerbahce allowed the guests to control the tempo
of the game and keeping their cool at the end, managed to escape with a
valuable win. The victory leaves Fenerbahce atop of Group C with a 3-0
tied with Montepaschi Siena, while Barca drops to 2-1. Roko Ukic led
the winners with his 13 points and Marko Tomas added 12. For Barcelona,
Pete Mickeal had 17 points, Juan Carlos Navarro 12, Jaka Lakovic 11 and

Maccabi
Electra led from start to finish en route to a convincing 54-67 road
win over Partizan mt:s at Pionir Arena in the Serbian capital on
Thursday. Maccabi started the game with a 2-18 charge and the hosts
never seriously threatened the rest of the way. It was a much different
story than Maccabi’s last visit to Belgrade, when Partizan beat the
team from Tel Aviv twice to win last season’s Quarterfinal Playoffs
series 3-1 and advance to the 2010 Euroleague Final Four. Maccabi
improved to 2-1 and joined a four-way tie for first place in Group A.
Next week Maccabi visits another of the co-leaders, BC Khimki Moscow
Region. Jeremy Pargo had his best game yet in the Euroleague with 17

Siena remained undefeated after three games in the Turkish Airlines
Euroleague regular season thanks to another win, this time at home,
againt Cibona by 80-57 in a Group C game played Wednesday. The hosts
dominated the first quarter, but in the second, Cibona came back to cut

Group D by downing Russian powerhouse CSKA Moscow 82-57 at home on
Wednesday. Valencia moved up to 1-2 and improved its chances to make it
to the Top 16. CSKA dropped to 0-3 and needs to bounce back right away
to rejoin the Top 16 race. Valencia handed CSKA its biggest Euroleague
loss since the competition started in 2000. It is also CSKA's worst

Wednesday. Both teams are now tied in Group A, each with a 1-1 record.
Nathan Jawai led the winners with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Oliver
Lafayette added 13 points while Dusan Kecman had 12 for Partizan. Keith
Langford led Khimki with 19 points. Zoran Planinic added 16 while
Kresimir Loncar had 13 and 9 rebounds for the guests, that led for the
best part of the game and managed to get a 36-42 edge after the break.

already-full list on Thursday when he became the first player to take
part in 200 Euroleague Basketball games. Holden came off the bench in
the first quarter of CSKA's season-opening Turkish Airlines Euroleague
game on Thursday against visiting Armani Jeans Milano. Before the game,
at midcourt, CSKA presented Holden with a commemorative jersey with the
number 200 on the back. The achievement resonated even more with the
home fans in Moscow who knew that Holden had missed much of the

by edging Efes Pilsen 95-90 in double overtime in front of 8,700 fans
at Stozice Arena in Ljubljana, Slovenia in Group D on Wednesday night.
It was the third-ever double-overtime game in competition history.
Olimpija started the Euroleague season with a win for the first time
since 2003-04. Kevinn Pinkney paced the winners with 23 points. Goran
Jagodnik added 21 off the bench, Vlado Ilievksi and Kenny Gregory each

Turkish Airlines Season, and when the dust settled in Russia on
Wednesday night, host Khimki Moscow Region had outlasted never-say-die
Asseco Prokom Gdynia 82-76 thanks to some much-needed last-minute
concentration. Khimki goes 1-0 in Group A, but played with fire all
night, letting Prokom come back from double-digit deficits repeatedly.

BC became the first team to register a win in the 2010-11 Turkish
Airlines Euroleague by downing Real Madrid 82-66 in the competition's
Opening Game at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Pireaus, Greece in
Group B on Monday. Olympiacos proved right away that it is a top
candidate to go far in the Euroleague this season, but Madrid showed
great character and stayed in the game for the opening three quarters.
Ioannis Bourousis paced the winners with 16 points and 7 rebounds in
less than 23 minutes. Vassilis Spanoulis had 16 points, reigning
Euroleague MVP Milos Teodosic added 15 and Rasho Nesterovic netted 12
for Olympiacos. Teodosic and Spanoulis each dished 7 assists, one shy
of the Euroleague Opening Game record that still belongs to Theo
Papaloukas. Sergio Llull led Madrid with 18 points. Carlos Suarez added
12 and Ante Tomic scored 10 for the guests. Felipe Reyes led a 0-9 run
that allowed Madrid to take its biggest lead, 19-28, early in the

2010-11 Turkish Airlines Euroleague season starts with a very special
showdown, as Olympiacos hosts Real Madrid on Monday at 20:45 CET. Both
teams faced each other at the Euroleague Opening Game on October 16,
2000. Madrid beat Olympiacos 75-73 back then and 10 years later, both
teams are serious about opening another decade with a victory. Madrid
and Olympiacos also faced in the 1995 European Cup final and last met
in the 2008-09 Quarterfinal Playoffs, in which the Reds sealed a Final
Four ticket for the first time in a decade with a road win at Madrid,

The
new logo for the Turkish Airlines Euroleague was unveiled on Tuesday in
Barcelona during a special presentation ceremony attended by
representatives of Turkish Airlines, Euroleague Basketball, clubs,
leagues and media. The Turkish Airlines Euroleague logo is a fusion of
the already existing Euroleague Basketball logo and that of Turkish
Airlines, Europe's fourth-largest carrier of air passengers. The logo
seeks to merge both companies' graphic identities and conserve their
values and recognition by all fans across Europe, which is one of the
biggest markets for Turkish Airlines, with more than 70 destinations.

The
first stops on the road to the 2011 Euroleague Final Four are now clear
after the regular season and qualifying rounds draws for the 2010-11
Euroleague season took place Thursday in Barcelona, Spain. 2010
Euroleague champion Regal FC Barcelona, runner-up Olympiacos Piraeus,
2008 champ CSKA Moscow and reigning Spanish champion Caja Laboral
headline the regular season groups in which 22 teams were drawn.
Sixteen more clubs will contest the qualifying rounds to round out the
four groups of six teams. Qualifying begins on September 21 and last
through October 8, setting the stage for the new season. The regular
season tips off with the traditional opening game, held this year on
Monday, October 18, with the remaining 11 opening week games taking
