The Changing Face of the NCAA
Tournament
|
|
|
As with every year there is a surprising new crop of
teams that have risen to the top of the sport and others have fallen.
The most shocking team has to be the 2009 NCAA Champion North Carolina
Tarheels. Being the champions, they did have a large turnover on their
roster, losing most of their best players to the NBA. However, they
replaced them with some of the most talented freshman in the country.
They managed an 11-3 start giving their fan base hope, but have since
been floundering in their conference schedule and have fallen to 14-12.
Another team whose tourney streak is almost certainly coming to an end
is the Arizona Wildcats. They lost their coach Lute Olson to retirement
as with their two best players. Arizona’s fall shows just how quick a
coaching change can affect a program.
Arizona’s entire conference, the Pac-10, which
traditionally produced several bids is likely to produce only one this
year. While some conferences suffer, others will benefit.
On the other side of things the Atlantic-10 conference, which at least
in recent memory has not been a multi-bid league, may produce up to six
bids this year. Longtime powerhouse Kentucky, who missed the tourney
for the first time in decades last year, is going make a triumphant
return after starting 25-1 under new coach John Calipari.
