December 15, 2012 - Regular Season Week 10, bwin MVPs: Nemanja Bjelica of Caja Laboral and Shawn James of Maccabi

nemanja bjelicaFor the third time this Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season, the honor for the week’s best performance is shared by two players. The regular season came to an end with a flurry of close games, but it was great efforts in a pair of bigger victories that saw Nemanja Bjelica of Caja Laboral Vitoria and Shawn James of Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv become bwin co-MVPs for Week 10. It is the first such honor for each player. Both compiled performance index ratings of 27 – the best among all players on winning teams this week – in leading their teams to important wins. Bjelica only missed 1 shot while scoring 22 points, his Euroleague career high, as Vitoria routed Cedevita Zagreb 97-70. Read more here.

Zalgiris Kaunas 71 - 53 Anadolu Efes Istanbul

tremmell dardenZalgiris Kaunas became a group champion for the first time this century after beating Anadolu Efes Istanbul 71-53 in a game the hosts never trailed on Friday night at Zalgirio Arena. On the final day of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season, Zalgiris improved to 8-2 to grab the top spot in Group C, while Efes finished with a 5-5 record and in the third place. The Lithuanian champions opened a double-digit lead on an 8-point run from Marko Popovic in the second quarter, but sealed the deal when they allowed only 7 points in the third quarter and entered the final 10 minutes with a 58-37 lead. In victory, Zalgiris collected 18 offensive rebounds and got 18 points from Paulius Jankunas. Read more here.

Olympiacos 82 - 81 EA7 Emporio Armani

vassilis spanoulisDefending champion Olympiacos Piraeus held on for an 82-81 victory over EA7 Emporio Armani Milan on Friday at the Peace and Friendship Stadium to finish the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season in style. The Reds reeled off their seventh straight win to improve to 8-2, which left them second in Group C on a tiebreaker behind Zalgiris Kaunas. Olympiacos had a slim lead for most of the second half before Armani rallied to set up a thrilling finish. The last three-and-a-half minutes featured eight lead changes before free throws set up the last play: Milan’s Keith Langford missed a long jumper at the buzzer, leaving the win for the home side. Caja Laboral Vitoria 97 - 70 Cedevita Zagreb


tibor pleissCaja Laboral Vitoria made it to the Top 16 from Group C by thrashing Cedevita Zagreb 97-70 at Fernando Buesa Arena on Friday. Vitoria finished fourth in Group C with a 4-6 record after winning its last three games to clinch a Top 16 spot. Cedevita bows out of its maiden Euroleague season with a 2-8 record and in sixth place. Fabien Causeur paced the winners with 23 points on 5-of-5 three-point shooting. Nemanja Bjelica added 22 on 7-of-7 two-point shooting, Andres Nocioni scored 11 and Maciej Lampe 10 for Vitoria. Goran Suton and Mickael Gelabale led Cedevita with 12 points apiece. Brose Baskets Bamberg 92 - 90 Partizan mt:s

bostjan nachbarIn one of the most exciting games of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague season, Brose Baskets Bamberg advanced to the Top 16 for the first time since 2006 by edging Partizan mt:s Belgrade 92-90 in overtime in a make-or-break battle for fourth place in Group D on Thursday. Brose finishes fourth in Group D with a 3-7 record, while Partizan is sixth at 2-8. The guests needed to win and for Besiktas JK Istanbul to down Lietuvos Rytas. When Besiktas won 66-65, the game turned into a do-or-die showdown for fourth place, in which Brose prevailed. Bostjan Nachbar paced the winners with 23 points. Real Madrid 91 - 60 Union Olimpija Ljubljana

Real Madrid ran rampant on Thursday night at the Palacio de Los Deportes, sweeping aside Union Olimpija Ljubljana 91-60 in the final game of the regular season to claim first place in Group A. Jaycee Carroll was the standout scorer for Madrid with 17 points, in a contest that saw the regular starters for the Whites play limited minutes. Sergio Llull finished with 14 points and 6 assists and Nikola Mirotic and Mirza Begic added 11 each. Already eliminated from the Top 16 qualification spots, Olimpija was playing for pride in one of its toughest road games of the year, but could do nothing to stop the hosts. Aron Baynes, whose night was tapered by foul trouble early on, tallied 13 points and 8 rebounds and Dino Muric added 11 points in defeat. Read more here.

FC Barcelona Regal 75 - 78 CSKA Moscow

nenad krsticCSKA Moscow picked up its fifth consecutive victory, rallying from a double-digit deficit to edge FC Barcelona Regal 75-78 in Palau Blaugrana on Thursday. The loss ruined Barcelona’s unbeaten record, but the Spanish champions finished top of the Group D due to their 21-point win in the first match between these two teams. CSKA finished the regular season with an identical 9-1 record and in second place. Barcelona grabbed a double-digit lead in the second quarter by scoring 14 unanswered points in a 21-1 run. The visitors rallied in the third quarter behind Nenad Krstic and Milos Teodosic. Dionte Christmas and Teodosic hit triples in a 1-10 run that gave CSKA lead for good. Read more here.

Montepaschi Siena 88 - 95 Asseco Prokom

Asseco Prokom Gdynia finished its 2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague campaign with a smile by rallying from a 28-point second-half deficit to force overtime and defeat Montepaschi Siena 88-95 on the road in Group B on Thursday. Prokom broke a six-game losing streak and finished sixth in Group B with a 2-8 record. Montepaschi dropped to 5-5, ranked third in Group B and will keep fighting for Euroleague glory in the Top 16. Jerel Blassingame led the winners with 26 points. Lukasz Koszarek added 20, Rasid Mahalbasic tallied 18 and 16 rebounds, Mateusz Ponitka scored 14 points and Piotr Szczokta contributed 10 for Prokom. Bobby Brown had 23 points for Montepaschi, while Matt Janning added 11. Brown scored 11 first-quarter points and Aleksandar Rasic struck three times from downtown to give Montepaschi a 26-13 lead after 10 minutes. Read more here.

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv 78 - 62 Alba Berlin

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv took care of Alba Berlin 78-62 on Thursday night at Nokia Arena to clinch first place in Group B. The Israeli champ dominated the first half and led by 24 at the break en route to the win. Maccabi finished the regular season with an 8-2 record; Berlin, which is also headed to the Top 16, placed fourth in Group B with a 4-6 mark. Alba never quit on the game and closed the gap to 8 in the fourth quarter, but Maccabi’s big lead proved to be insurmountable. Ricky Hickman paced Maccabi with 17 points and 5 assists, David Logan added 15 points, Yogev Ohayon scored 14, Sylven Landesberg 13 and Shawn James tallied 10 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals. Deon Thompson led Alba with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals, Nihad Djedovic added 13 points, Derrick Byars 12 and Heiko Schaffartzik accounted for 10 points and 5 assists. Read more here.

Unicaja Malaga 86 - 62 Elan Chalon-Sur-Saone

Unicaja Malaga had no problem whatsoever on Thursday night to defeat Elan Chalon at home by 86-62 in Group B. The win was what Unicaja needed to try to win the top spot in the group, but Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv also defeated Alba Berlin in the other group game, and therefore things stayes as they were with the Israeli team winning the group and Unicaja finishing seconds with a 8-2 record, just like Maccabi. Chalon, who was already eliminated from the Top 16 race before the game, dropped to 3-7 to put an end to its Turkish Airlines Euroleague season. Unicaja will land on Top 16's Group E. Great defense allowed the hosts to run in offense and they soon built a big gap on the score that was never threatened by Chalon. Read more here.

BC Khimki MR 78 - 77 Panathinaikos Athens

kresimir loncarBC Khimki Moscow Region extended its winning streak to seven straight home games and secured one of the top two spots in Group A by edging Panathinaikos Athens 78-77. The hosts survived a thrilling fourth quarter that featured multiple ties and lead changes to win and improve to 6-4. Khimki eyes turn to Madrid after the game, knowing that if Union Olimpija were to upset Real Madrid, Khimki would finish atop Group A. Panathinaikos, also 6-4, finishes in third place due to tiebreakers. Zoran Planinic scored 8 of his 16 points in the first quarter as the hosts surged ahead. Fenerbahce Ulker 77 - 69 Mapooro Cantu


bojan bogdanovicIn a do-or-die battle on the final day of Group A, Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul edged Mapooro Cantu 77-69 on Thursday to grab the last remaining Top 16 spot from the group. Fenerbahce advances with a 5-5 record, enough for the fourth place in the standings, while Cantu is eliminated and finishes its Euroleague campaign in sixth place with a 3-7 record. In the game in which neither team had a double-digit advantage, Fenerbahce grabbed their first lead with an 8-0 run in the second quarter and never trailed again. With the game on the line in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Romain Sato had couple of crucial offensive rebounds and Omer Onan and Bo McCalebb made shots that sealed the deal and sent Fenerbahce into Top 16. December 13, 2012 - It's all up for grabs!

The 2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season comes to an end with 12 exciting showdowns in Game 10 on Thursday and Friday. When the dust settles, all four regular season groups champions will be known and the three remaining Top 16 spots will be filled. The action starts Thursday with three games each in in Groups A, B and D. In Group A, Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul (4-5) takes on Mapooro Cantu (3-6) and BC Khimki Moscow Region (5-4) goes against Panathinaikos Athens (6-3) at 18:00 CET. Later, at 20:45 CET, Real Madrid (6-3) welcomes Union Olimpija Ljubljana (3-6). Panathinaikos will be first if it wins and third if it loses. Schilb led Chalon to a spectacular 108-103 overtime home win with 28 points on 6-of-7 two-point shots, 3-of-5 three-pointers and 7-of-8 free throw attempts. He added 7 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal, a block and 6 fouls drawn for a performance index ranking of 38, the highest all around the competition this week. Sasha Vujacic of Anadolu Efes Istanbul shined in his team's home loss against Caja Laboral Vitoria with 21 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 7 fouls drawn, good for a 28 index. Panathinaikos Athens 69 - 55 Fenerbahce Ulker

sofoklis schortsanitisPanathinaikos Athens jumped into a tie for first place in Group A with a great defensive display in a win over Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul 69-55 at O.A.K.A. in the Greek capital on Friday night. The win improved Panathinaikos’s record to 6-3, and Greens will win the group if they beat BC Khimki Moscow Region next week. Fenerbahce dropped to 4-5 record and fourth place and needs a win at home against Mapooro Cantu in order to advance into the Top 16. Panathinaikos grabbed control of the game with an 8-0 run in the second quarter that gave it a 28-19 lead, and the visitors never got closer than 3 points rest of the way. Elan Chalon-Sur-Saone 108 - 103 Montepaschi

Elan Chalon-Sur-Saone gave its fans one final home victory in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague in beating Montepaschi Siena 108-103 in overtime in Group B action, snapping Siena’s five-game winning streak. Blake Schilb led 3-6 Chalon with 28 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists while Jean Baptiste Adolph Michel set a career high with 20 points. Shelden Williams added 15 points and Steed Tchicamboud scored 14 points for Chalon, which was already out of the Top 16 race going into the game. Siena had already secured a spot in the next round, but dropped to 5-4 despite 26 points and 10 assists from Bobby Brown. Tomas Ress added 13 points, Matthew Janning had 12, Benjamin Eze scored 11 and David Moss and Kristjan Kangur both chipped in 10 points for Montepaschi. Read more here.

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan 65 - 67 Zalgiris

Zalgiris Kaunas held on to first place in Group C after escaping from Mediolanum Forum in the fashion capital with a 65-67 success over EA7 Emporio Armani Milan on Friday. Zalgiris and Olympiacos share first place with 7-2 records, but the Lithuanian champs have the tiebreak in their favor. Armani dropped to 3-6 – the same record as Caja Laboral in the fight to advance to the next round. Caja Laboral won both games with Milan and will hosts Cedevita Zagreb, while Armani will visit the defending champion Olympiacos Piraeus. Armani used a 13-4 run to open the second quarter and take a 29-22 lead before zone defense helped the home team finish ahead 37-32 at halftime. Read more here.

Union Olimpija 74 - 72 BC Khimki MR

Union Olimpija Ljubljana pleased its outstanding fans with a thrilling win in the team's last home game in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague season by downing BC Khimki Moscow Region 74-72 at Stozice Arena in the Slovenian capital in Group A on Friday. Olimpija improved to 3-6, but had already run out of chances to reach the Top 16 last week. Khimki dropped to 5-4, but has already reached the Top 16. Klemen Prepelic was the hero by nailing the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer. He also paced the winners with 16 points. Jaka Blazic added 13 while Sasu Salin, Aron Baynes and Drazen Bubnic each had 11 for Olimpija. Baynes added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Paul Davis led Khimki with 20 points on 10-of-11 free throw shooting. Read more here.

Anadolu Efes Istanbul 76 - 91 Caja Laboral

maciej lampeCaja Laboral Vitoria fueled its Top 16 hopes with a 76-91 road win over Anadolu Efes on Friday night in Istanbul. The victory lifted Laboral to 3-6 and ensured that the fourth and final Top 16 ticket in Group C won’t be handed out until next week. Efes, which dropped to 5-4, already qualified to the next stage. Maciej Lampe shined early in leading Laboral to a 34-38 halftime lead and finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Last week’s buzzer-beating hero Thomas Heurtel tok over after that and amassed 22 points to lead the winners. Heurtel’s fourth quarter performance held off an Efes challenge and led Coach Zan Tabak’s team to back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Read more here.

Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius 67 - 62 Brose Baskets


renaldas seibutisIn a dramatic finish at Siemens Arena, Lietuvos Rytas held on to beat Brose Baskets Bamberg 67-62, but the visitors claimed the tiebreak advantage between them on a John Goldsberry basket at the buzzer to keep the German champs’ fate in their own hands going into Game 10. Both teams now sport identical 2-7 records, as does Partizan mts Belgrade. Bamberg will reach the Top 16 from Group D if it beats Partizan next week in Germany. For Rytas to claim fourth place and a Top 16 berth, it must beat Besiktas on the road in Game 10 and hope for Bamberg to lose. Partizan mt:s Belgrade 67 - 68 Barcelona Regal

nathan jawaiFC Regal Barcelona remained the lone unbeaten team in the Euroleague after rallying from an 11-point deficit to pick up a 67-68 overtime win over Partizan mt:s Belgrade in front of packed Hala Pionir in the Serbian capital on Thursday night. Former Partizan player Nathan Jawai was Barcelona’s hero, as he blocked a potential game-winning floater from Djordje Gagic in the final seconds of overtime to keep Barcelona’s perfect record intact. Barcelona now holds 9-0 record a top of Group D, while Partizan drops to 2-7 and will need to beat Bamberg next week to have a chance to advance to the Top 16. Mapooro Cantu 76 - 70 Real Madrid

Mapooro Cantu kept its hopes to reach the Top 16 alive for at least one night with an inspiring 76-70 victory at PalaDesio over Real Madrid in Group A action. Manuchar Markoishvili collected 23 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks in helping Cantu improve to 3-6. Cantu, which will be eliminated if Fenerbahce beats Panathinaikos on Friday, got 14 points from Jonathan Tabu, 11 from Maarten Leunen and 10 from Marco Cusin. Real Madrid dropped to 6-3 despite 24 points from Jaycee Carroll, 17 from Sergio Llull and 11 points and 10 rebounds from Felip Reyes. Read more here.

Asseco Prokom Gdynia 73 - 89 Maccabi Electra

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv scored a 73-89 road win over Asseco Prokom Gdynia on Thursday night, but the scoreline tells a different story to what actually occurred for three quarters of the contest. Plucky Prokom –already eliminated from Top 16 contention – led from the middle of the opening quarter until the final half of the fourth quarter, before a breakdown for the Polish champs ended its chances of a home victory. The key was that fourth quarter, in which Prokom scored just 8 points to Maccabi’s 27. The visitors were only kept in the game by some timely baskets from guard Ricky Hickman, who finished with 20 points.

Alba Berlin 63 - 74 Unicaja Malaga

marcus williamsUnicaja Malaga kept its chances to finish first in Group B by downing Alba Berlin 63-74 in the German capital on Thursday. Unicaja improved to 7-2 and is tied for first place with Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv. Unicaja will win Group A if it beats Elan Chalon-sur-Saone next week and Alba beats Maccabi. Alba dropped to 4-5 and ranks fourth overall. Both teams were already qualified to the Top 16 before the game. Marcus Williams paced the winners with 16 points. Luka Zoric added 11 for Unicaja. Sven Schultze led Alba with 12 points while Derrick Byars and Yassin Idbihi each added 11 for the hosts. Idbihi added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Read more here.

Cedevita Zagreb 62 - 84 Olympiacos Piraeus

josh powellOlympiacos Piraeus collected its sixth straight win at the expense of Cedevita Zagreb, 62-84, on Thursday in the Croatian capital. The hosts rallied late in the second quarter to close to within 37-40 at halftime, but the Reds controlled the action in the third quarter as they extended the lead to 16 and never looked back. Olympiacos improved to 7-2 to remain atop the Group C standings, though Zalgiris can tie the champs if it wins Friday. Cedevita dropped to 2-7 and its Top 16 hopes suffered a critical blow. bwin November MVP Vassilis Spanoulis continued his run of great form with 14 points and 5 assists to lead the winners. CSKA Moscow 87 - 72 Besiktas JK Istanbul


milos teodosicCSKA Moscow pulled away in the second half for an 87-72 victory over Besiktas JK Istanbul on Thursday night in the Russian capital. Besiktas played strong and led for much of the first two-and-a-half quarters. It was 56- 61 midway through the third quarter, but in the next nine minutes of game time, CSKA went on a 19-2 romp to put the game away. Milos Teodosic orchestrated a balanced CSKA attack with 11 assists as the Russian champs improved to 8-1 and will have a shot at first place in Group D when they visit FC Barcelona Regal next week. December 6, 2012 - It's crunch time!

The 2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season enters Game 9 with as many as 13 teams already qualified to the Top 16, but only one of those - Besiktas JK Istanbul, third in Group D - knowing its final standing. At the same time, just three other teams have completely run out of Top 16 chances, so that’s leaves eight teams fighting for three available places in the next round. Game 9 opens on Thursday with six exciting showdowns spread across all four groups. In the earliest game, CSKA Moscow (7-1)welcomes Besiktas (4-4) at 17:00 CET with the hosts looking to stay in the hunt or first place in Group D. At 18:30 CET, Cedevita Zagreb hosts Olympiacos Pireaus in Group C n a critical game for both teams. But then not many players lead a team in every way quite like Olympiacos Piraeus guard Vassilis Spanoulis, who is Euroleague Basketball's choice as bwin MVP for November. The standing ovation was given to Spanoulis early in November by the fans of EA7 Emporio Armani Milan in recognition of his virtuoso performance in a key road win for the defending champs. At month's end, last season's Final Four MVP deserves another ovation for driving Olympiacos from a 1-2 start to five consecutive victories in November that leave no doubt how ready the Reds are to defend their trophy this season. The win keeps Madrid in first place in Group A with a 6-2 record, while Fenerbahce drops to 4-4 and fourth place, still needing one victory to secure a place in the Top 16. The visitors led for 29 minutes in Madrid, but the hosts made a crucial 19-3 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters. During that span, Real Madrid did not allow a single field goal for six-and-a-half minutes, opening up a 64-52 lead and putting the game away. Barcelona used a 16-0 run spanning the second and third quarters to pull away and improve to 8-0. Joe Ingles scored a career-high 22 points as the only Barcelona player in double figures while 11 of the 12 players scored. Victor Sada collected 6 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Kostas Papanikolaou added 13 points and Josh Powell had 10 for the defending champions, who made 14 of 27 three-point shots at Zalgirio Arena. Caja Laboral rallied from a 17-point deficit to pull out a 64-62 win over EA7 Emporio Armani Milan and stay alive in the hunt for the Top 16. Laboral now moves into a share of fifth place in Group C with Cedevita Zagreb with a 2-6 record, while Milan drops to 3-5 and holds on to fourth place with two games remaining. The visitors held a 23-40 lead in the second quarter and had a 14-point halftime advantage, but Caja Laboral rallied in the second half. In a thrilling finish, Thomas Heurtel ended up Laboral’s hero scoring a game-winning layup with 5 seconds remaining. Partizan improved to 2-6 in Group D and is now tied for fourth place with Brose Baskets Bamberg. Both teams are set to meet again in regular season Game 10, in what promises to be a critical showdown. Rytas dropped to 1-7 and needs to win its two remaining games to keep its chances alive. Panathinaikos Athens qualified for the Top 16 for the 12th consecutive season after downing Union Olimpija 80-72 in O.A.K.A arena on Thursday night. Panathinaikos now holds a 5-3 record for a second place tie in Group A, while the loss eliminates Olimpija, which fell to 2-6. The Greens made a key run in the third quarter, turning a tied game into a 17-point affair thanks in part to three-pointers from Jonas Maciulis, Michael Bramos and Marcus Banks in addition to the team’s strong defensive effort. Olimpija came back within 4 points, but in the end the hosts managed to hang on for an important victory. Nenad Krstic returned from his injury break with 18 points while Milos Teodosic added 19 points and 9 assists. Sonny Weems picked up 16 points for the winners and Viktor Khryapa added 11. Bamberg dropped to 2-6 despite five players scoring in double figures led by 18 points from Casey Jacobsen, 16 from Anton Gavel, 15 from Bostjan Nachbar and 10 each from Teddy Gipson and Philipp Neumann. Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv booked its place in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16 with a hard-fought 78-73 victory over Elan Chalon on Thursday night at Nokia Arena. The Israeli champs ended a two-game losing streak and also Euroleague newcomer Chalon’s hopes of progressing to the next stage of the competition. Maccabi improved to 6-2, while Chalon fell to 2-6. A final quarter rally decided the outcome with Devin Smith and David Logan playing big roles. Smith paced Maccabi with 19 points, Logan added 17 and Shawn James posted 10 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. In fact Alba could still advance to the next stage if Maccabi Electra beats Elan Chalon in Tel Aviv later in the evening. Alba improved its record to 5-3 in Group B, while the Polish champs lost their fifth straight game to fall to 1-7 and lose any mathematical chance of playing past December. Alba led much of the game and extended the difference to 14 at the start of the fourth quarter, but Prokom never quit and rallied to within 1 on a Piotr Pamula three-pointer in the final minute, which set up a free throw contest at the finish. Cedevita Zagreb 73 - 81 Anadolu Efes Istanbul

Efes improved to 5-3 and secured a Top 16 berth along with Olympiacos Piraeus, which qualified a day before it faces Zalgiris Kaunas for the top spot in the group. Cedevita dropped to 2-6 and will run out of Top 16 chances this week if EA7 Emporio Armani beats Caja Laboral Vitoria on the road. Jordan Farmar paced the winners with 21 points. Cantu dropped to 2-5 with two games left to play. A great defensive effort helped Khimki to a big second quarter run and a commanding double-digit advantage before triples from Sergey Monya and Vitaly Fridzon extended the lead to 20 points after halftime. November 29, 2012 - Week 8, decision time

The Turkish Airlines Euroleague reaches pivotal Week 8 facing plenty of interesting scenarios. Some teams can become group champions, some others can access the Top 16 and others still can run out of chances to keep fighting for the next round. The action starts with eight showdowns on a very busy Thursday in which a lot of teams will be watching more than their on results. In Group A, BC Khimki Moscow Region (4-3) welcomes Mapooro Cantu (2-5) at 16:30 CET. Khimki will reach the Top 16 with a win combined with an Union Olimpija Ljubljana (2-5) loss against Panathinaikos Athens (4-3) when those teams face each other in the Greek capital at 20:00 CET. If Panathinaikos and Khimki win, both teams are in the Top 16 along with Real Madrid (5-2). Bobby Brown scored 16 points and dished 6 assist, but Daniel Hackett and Tomas Ress were the heroes late. Hackett tallied 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter and Ress 10 of his 12 points in the final period for the hosts, who improved to 4-3 in the group. Kristjan Kangur also scored 12 points and Mario Kasun chipped in 10 points off the bench for Siena, which nailed 13 of 27 three-pointers. Avenging a close loss from one month ago, Real Madrid took over exclusive possession of first place in Group A and put one foot in the Top 16 by overwhelming Khimki Moscow Region 104-81 before a happy crowd in the Spanish capital on Friday. Madrid raised its record to 5-2, all but mathematically qualified for the next round, while Khimki fell to 4-3 and a second-place tie with Fenerbahce Ulker and Panathinaikos Athens. The visitors from Russia tried and succeeded to score with their hosts, until Madrid took a 46-45 halftime lead, its first in 15 minutes. After that, though, the hosts exploded with 58 points in the second half, and Khimki couldn't match. Rudy Fernandez led the five Madrid double-figure scorers with 23 points in just 17 minutes. The victory means Panathinaikos is now 4-3 and tied for second place tie in Group A standings, while Cantu drops to 2-5 in a share of fifth place with Union Olimpija. In a tight contest, neither team had a lead larger than 6 points at any point in the game. Cantu led 66-60 with three minutes to go, but Bramos and Dimitris Diamantidis responded with back to back triples, before Bramos nailed his final three-pointer with 50 seconds remaining to give the visitors victory. The victory lifted the Turkish champs to 4-3 in Group D, while Bamberg slipped to 2-5. Besiktas can seal a spot in the next stage Friday with a victory over FC Barcelona Regal. Patrick Christopher shined with 20 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting plus 7 rebounds and Curtis Jerrells added 17 points and 6 assists for the winners. Bamberg built a double-digit lead late in the second quarter, but Besiktas started the third with a 10-2 charge and reeled off 14 straight points between the third and fourth quarters to take total control. Zalgiris’s defensive effort resulted in Laboral’s lowest score ever in Euroleague history; its previous low was 52 points against AEK Athens on January 17, 2001. Barcelona remains the only undefeated team in the competition at 7-0, while L. Rytas dropped to 1-6. Juan Carlos Navarro paced the winners with 24 points. Navarro was honored before and during the game, commemorating 15 years since his first team debut. Five Barcelona socios (shareholders) who were born that day – November 23, 1997 – were invited to the game and many gifts were given throughout the game, including 15 signed Navarro jerseys. EA7 Emporio Armani 75 - 60 Cedevita Zagreb

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan registered a 75-60 win over Cedetiva Zagreb on Thursday night to stay on pace to reach the Top 16. Armani improved to 3-4 and sits in fourth place in Group C. A third quarter in which Milan outscored Cedevita 25-9 proved to be the turning point, and the visitor was unable to recover in the fourth. Ioannis Bourousis –still recovering from a knee injury- led Milan alongside Keith Langford with 11 points in a cameo appearance that also featured 12 rebounds. Olympiacos Piraeus 75 - 53 Anadolu Efes

Olympiacos Piraeus used a great defensive effort to take a huge step towards a place in the Top 16 with a 75-53 win over Anadolu Efes Istanbul at the Peace and Friendship Stadium on Thursday night. The win lifts the reigning Turkish Airlines Euroleague champions into a sole possession of second place in Group C with 5-2 record, while Efes dropped to 4-3 and into third place. Efes, however, managed to preserve the hold of a potential tiebreaker over Olympiacos as the 22-point loss is a smaller deficit that its win over the Reds in Istanbul. Olympiacos allowed only 1 field goal and a total of 6 points in the second quarter to open up a double-digit lead, and then used a 21-4 third quarter run to seal the deal. Read more here.

Unicaja Malaga 63 - 48 Asseco Prokom Gdynia

Unicaja Malaga booked a spot in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16 with a superb defensive effort in a 63-48 victory at home over Asseco Prokom Gdynia in Group B. Malaga improved to 6-1 with its sixth straight win – paced by 12 points from Kosta Perovic, who had totaled just 8 points in the first six games of the group. Earl Calloway added 11 points for the winners. Prokom came into the game hitting 40 percent of its three-pointers, but missed its first 19 triple attempts in dropping to 1-6 in the group. The win snapped Berlin’s four game losing streak and improved its record to 3-3. More importantly for Coach Saso Obradovic and co., the result dropped Chalon to 2-4 and gave Berlin the tiebreak advantage between them. In a game that was close throughout the first three quarters, Heiko Schaffartzik and Deon Thompson helped push Berlin to a 10-point fourth-quarter lead. However Chalon never quit and closed to within 2 later. But Berlin managed to hold on, made its free throws and snagged the victory. Read more here.

Fenerbahce now hold 4-3 record, which puts it into a tie for second place in Group A, while Olimpija drops to 2-5 and must turn things around to have a realistic chance of advancing. Fueled with 11 points from Bojan Bogdanovic, the hosts made a 15-3 run early in the first quarter to take control. Fenerbahce maintained the lead in double figures throughout the game and sealed the deal with a 16-2 fourth quarter charge. The Reds improved to 4-2 and joined Anadolu Efes Istanbul in a tie for second place in Group C. Kyle Hines led the way with 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting and Vassilis Spanoulis added 14 points and 8 assists. Olympiacos simply dominated the proceedings, outrebounding Laboral 27-43 and dishing nearly twice as many assists (11-21) as the home team. The loss was Laboral’s worst at home since a 2009 playoff loss to FC Barcelona. Bracey Wright and Vlado Ilievski played big roles as Cedevita came from behind to tie the game and force overtime, then Mickael Gelabale forced the second extra session with a follow-dunk before the hosts wrested control of the game. Panathinaikos Athens snapped its two-game losing streak by downing Real Madrid 79-68 in OAKA Arena on Thursday night. Panathinaikos also holds a potential tiebreaker over Madrid due the 11-point margin of victory, which is greater than its loss in Madrid. The Greens now sport a 3-3 record for tie for third-place with Fenerbahce Ulker in Group A, while Real Madrid drops to 4-2, but remains tied atop of the group. Siena managed to build 14-point leads midway through the game, but Alba regrouped with good defense and patience in offense to trim the deficit down little by little and even managed to jump ahead by three points at 67-64. Baskets by Tomas Ress and Daniel Hackett allowed Siena to jump ahead for good, as in thelast play Zach Morley missed the chance to send the game into overtime. Elan Chalon escaped from Ergo Arena in Gdynia with a 70-76 road win over Asseco Prokom, on Thursday to remain in the thick of the battle for a Top 16 spot. The French champs improved to 2-4 in Group B, while the Polish champs dropped to 1-5. Chalon used a 0-8 fourth-quarter run to take a 58-64 lead and never looked back. An excellent three-point shooting performance made the difference for the winners, who were 11 for 20 from downtown. Both teams are now tied with 2-5 records, but Olimpija has already beaten Cantu twice. Jaka Blazic paced the winners with 30 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting. Marcus Williams helped Unicaja take the lead late in a tightly contested fourth quarter and Maccabi was unable to score on its final possession. The result extends Unicaja’s winning streak to five games and leaves the two teams tied atop Group B at 5-1. Williams led a well-balanced Unicaja attack with 12 points and Zoran Dragic added 10. FC Barcelona Regal used a 12-0 third-quarter run to pull away from Brose Baskets Bamberg en route to an 86-66 road victory, which made Barcelona the first team to clinch a berth in the 2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16. Eleven of Barcelona’s 12 players scored, led by Pete Mickael with 17 points, while Erazem Lorbek added 14 points and Juan Carlos Navarro had 13 points as Barca improved to 6-0 in Group D. With the victory, CSKA stays in second place in Group D with a 5-1 record, while Rytas occupies fifth place after dropping to 1-5. After a close affair in the entire first half, CSKA used a 0-8 run midway through the third quarter to take control of the game and back-to-back three-pointers from Milos Teodosic made it a double-digit advantage and paved the way to victory. Bamberg trailed for most of the night after the hosts took control of the game with a 15-2 second-quarter run, but the margin never reached double figures. Siena out-scored Prokom 37-12 in the third quarter to blow the game wide open and improve to 2-3 while Prokom dropped to 1-4. A week after tallying 34 points and a 43 performance index rating as bwin MVP for Week 4, Siena guard Bobby Brown had 25 points, 7 assists and a 31 rating, nailing 6 of 9 triples against Prokom. All told, Siena made 19 of 34 shots from long range and 18 of 20 free throws. Three-pointers made the difference in the game. The Lithuanian champs – led by Marko Popovic’s 7-for-10 effort – finished the game making 50% of their 26 three-point attempts. Efes managed only 3 for 15 (20%) from downtown. Popovic finished with 21 points for the winners, Tremmell Darden scored 16 and Darjus Lavrinovic added 15 off the bench. Devin Smith led Maccabi with 20 crucial points, which included 4 triples from 5 attempts, and team captain Guy Pnini added 11 for the winners. Nihad Djedovic had a big role in bringing Berlin back after a tough start and finished with 17 points plus 7 rebounds. Deon Thompson added 14 points and Zach Morley 10 in defeat. Defending champion Olympiacos Piraeus escaped from Medialonum Forum in Milan with a 71-84 win over EA7 Emporio Armani in Group C thanks to a brilliant evening from All-Euroleague guard Vassilis Spanoulis. The Reds improved their record to 3-2 in Group C, while Armani dropped to 2-3. Olympiacos used a 13-2 second-quarter run highlighted by Kostas Papanikolaou three-pointers to grab a double digit margin, 30-40. Another 9-2 early run in the third made it 38-50 advantage and an 15-4 charge early in the last quarter completed the job for the defending champions. A 6-17 second-quarter run gave Alba a 5-point halftime lead, but the hosts quickly erased the deficit in the third quarter and then used couple of tough three-pointers from Marcus Williams in the final four minutes of the fourth to hold on to a slim lead. The victory put Unicaja in sole possession of the second place in Group B with a 3-1 record, while Alba dropped to 2-2 and into third place. The visitors limited Laboral to 7 third-quarter points and just 9 in the fourth while finding their own offensive rhythm to claim the vital road win. Efes improved to 3-1 and sits in second place in Group C with a chance to move into first when it hosts undefeated Zalgiris Kaunas next week. Jordan Farmar led the Efes attack with 18 points, while Kerem Gonlum added 10 in 12 minutes. The Efes offense was simply more efficient with 18 assists to Laboral’s 10 and better shooting percentages all around.

Barcelona improved to 4-0 and set up a big battle for first place in Group D next week, when it visits CSKA Moscow in the Russian capital. Partizan dropped to 0-4 and needs to bounce back right away to keeps its Top 16 options alive. Marcelinho Huertas paced the winners with 24 points on 6-of-7 three-point shooting and 9 assists. Real Madrid 80 - 66 Mapooro Cantu

Five players scored in double figures as Real Madrid beat Mapooro Cantu for the first time in 37 years, 80-66 in Group A action in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague. Mirza Begic led the way with 17 points while Rudy Fernandez and Nikola Mirotic both scored 14 points and Jaycee Carroll and Sergio Llull each added 11 points for Madrid, which last knocked off Cantu in 1975 and improved to 3-1 in the group. It was Real’s only other victory over the Italian side, which won the last meeting in the final of the 1991 Korac Cup. The visitors hit 8 three-pointers in the first half and led by as many as 8 points, but Zalgiris used a 10-0 run in the third to regain the lead. The 2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague regular season moves closer to its halfway mark as Week 4 of the regular season arrives with heavy showdowns. Some teams need to bounce back from defeats and others face direct opponents on their fight to reach the Top 16. Only four teams are undefeated and four others are still looking for their first wins, so Week 4 promises to bring a lot of excitement and emotions. Earl Calloway and James Gist were Unicaja’s heroes: Calloway scored a game-winning driving layup with 17 seconds left in overtime and Gist blocked Marcelus Kemp’s late attempt to send game into second extra session. With the dramatic win, Unicaja climbs into second place in the Group B standings with a 2-1 record, while Siena remains the only winless team in the group after three games. Panathinaikos raised its record to 3-1, matching both Real Madrid and Fenerbahce Ulker, while Olimpija lost its second in a row at home after having opened the season with a road win. Khimki was the aggressor early, but the hosts used assumed control after a 13-0 second-quarter run and never trailed again. The Cantu defense held Khimki to just 11 points in each of the final three quarters. Cantu and Khimki join a three-way tie for fourth place in group A with 2-1 records. Khimki, which was without head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis due to a death in his family, struggled with its shooting and made just 4 of 19 three-point shots (21.0%). It was a closer contest than the scoreline suggests, featuring numerous lead changes and hot streaks by both teams. Back after a stomach virus sidelined him in Spanish league action over the the weekend, Nemanja Bjelica led Caja Laboral with 20 points and 9 rebounds and emerged when it mattered in the fourth quarter. After three quarters of a seesaw battle, Prokom came up with 11 unanswered points at the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth, and overall a 22-5 run in a seven-minute span to build 66-55 lead en route to victory. With the win Maccabi improved to 3-0 to spearhead the standings ahead of Alba Berlin, while Chalon dropped its second straight game to fall to 1-2. Maccabi took over the game right from the start and finished the first quarter already with a double-figure advantage, 15-26, and continued to pressure until a 28-53 halftime lead. Rytas used a 16-0 run that bridged the first and second quarters to open up a 9-point lead and take control of the game. The loss dropped Brose Baskets to last place in Group D at 0-3. The game was close for most of the night. Five unanswered points by Teddy Gipson allowed the German champs to take a 51-53 edge at the end of the third quarter. Then back-to-back baskets by Karsten Tadda gave Brose a 61-63 edge with less than seven minutes remaining. It didn't last long, however, as CSKA improved its defense in crunch time while Milos Teodosic and Viktor Khryapa shined in a 13-0 run that put the hosts in control and paved the way to victory. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 11 of his 14 points in the first quarter while Omer Onan and Mike Batiste both added 13 points for Fenerbahce, which was outrebounded 40-29, including 16 offensive rebounds by Ljubljana. Cook made 5-of-7 three-pointers and the team shot 11 for 22 from downtown, which helped compensate for 16 turnovers. In an outstanding battle between Turkish Airlines Euroleague powerhouses, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv stayed undefeated in Group B by edging Montepaschi Siena 70-68 in Israel on Thursday. Maccabi leads Group B with a 2-0 record and Montepaschi dropped to 0-2. Ricky Hickman led the winners with 19 points, including the go-ahead basket with 4 seconds to go. Alba Berlin 74 - 71 Elan Chalon-Sur-Saone

brian randleAlba Berlin thrilled the fans at O2 World in the German capital with a come-from-behind 74-71 victory over Elan Chalon to improve to 2-0 in Group B. The hosts trailed for much of the game and were behind 53-66 early in the fourth quarter, but Heiko Schaffartzik helped lead a 21-2 charge, capped by a DaShaun Wood triple with 39 seconds to go, to soar ahead and claim the win. Deon Thompson kept Berlin in the game early and finished with a Euroleague career-high 24 points plus 8 rebounds. Wood added 19 points and Schaffartzik tallied 13 points and 5 assists. Steed Tchicamboud scored 20 to lead the French champs, who slipped to 1-1. Shelden Williams posted 14 points and 13 rebounds and Blake Schilb also scored 14 in defeat. Read more here.

Brose Baskets Bamberg 71 - 86 Besiktas JK

curtis jerrellsBesiktas JK Istanbul used a 2-16 run in each half en route to a convincing 71-86 road win over Brose Baskets Bamberg at Stechert Arena. Besiktas improved to 2-0 in Group D with the win, while Bamberg fell to 0-2. Muratcan Guler scored half the Besiktas points in the first big run, which bridged the first and second quarters and gave the Turkish champs the lead for good. It sat at 31-47 at halftime and reached 25 after the second 2-16 run at the end of the third quarter. Curtis Jerrells starred for the winners, leading the attack with 27 points. Guler added 14 points and 7 rebounds and Damir Markota scored 11 for the visitors, who shot a blistering 10 of 18 (55.5%) from downtown. Read more here.

Lietuvos Rytas 49 - 67 FC Barcelona Regal


joe inglesFC Barcelona Regal remained undefeated in Group D by topping Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius 49-67 at Siemens Arena in the Lithuanian capital on Thursday. Barcelona improved to 2-0 in Group D, while Rytas dropped to 0-2. Juan Carlos Navarro led the winners with 13 points and Joe Ingles added 11 for Barcelona. Leon Radosevic paced Rytas with 11 points. Pete Mickeal and Erazem Lorbek shined early to give Barcelona a 8-13 lead after 10 minutes. A jump hook by Nate Jawai boosted the guests' margin to 12-21 early in the second quarter. Asseco Prokom Gdynia 75 - 77 Unicaja Malaga

txemi urtasunUnicaja Malaga held on for its first win of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague season by edging Asseco Prokom Gdynia 75-77 on the road Wednesday in Group B. The visitors led throughout most of the game, but Prokom took the lead with three-and-a-half minutes to go. Txemi Urtasun put Unicaja back ahead, 72-73, with a clutch three-pointer and free throws by Earl Calloway iced the victory. Williams shined with 18 points and 4 assists for Coach Jasmin Repasa’s team. Txemi Urtasun added 14 points, Zoran Dragic scored 10 and Luka Zoric played a key defensive role with 5 blocks in just 20 minutes – 1 rejection short of the club’s Euroleague record. With echoes of past Final Fours ringing in their ears, the champs return to the scene of their glory and Euroleague action returns to the capital of Germany in Week 2 of the regular season. Game 2 starts early, as Asseco Prokom Gydnia hosts Unicaja Malaga in Group B on Wednesday at 19:45 CET. Both teams are looking for their first win and meet for the first time since the 2009-10 Top 16. Preldzic's near-flawless performance on Thursday pushed his team to a surefire 92-80 win over visiting Khimki Moscow Region before almost 10,000 delirious fans at Fenerbahce Ulker Sports Arena. dogus balbayEA7 Emporio Armani Milano opened its Turkish Airlines Euroleague season with a strong 80-75 victory over Anadolu Efes Istanbul in Group C play. Milano had lost 9 of its last 10 regular season games against Efes since 2005-06, but head coach Sergio Scariolo’s team made 15 of 28 three-pointers and used a 14-0 third quarter surge to gain control of the game. Ioannis Bourousis led the way for Milano with 23 points while Keith Langford added 16 points and Malik Hairston collected 10 points and 8 assists. Istanbul made things interesting in the fourth quarter with runs of 0 11 and 0-8, but it was not enough. Jordan Farmer paced Efes with 19 points and 6 rebounds. Read more here.

Real Madrid 85 - 78 Panathinaikos Athens

sergio llullReal Madrid got big games from three of its biggest stars to hold off an impressive new-look Panathinaikos 85-78 at the Community of Madrid Sports Palace in the Spanish capital on Friday night. Rudy Fernandez scored 23 points, Nikola Mirotic tallied 18 points and 8 rebounds and Sergio Llull was good for 15 points and 4 assists to lead Los Blancos. Madrid rode Fernandez to a 12-2 start, but the Greens never folded and former MVP Dimitis Diamantidis’s triple in the closing seconds of the first half made it 35-44 at the break. Montepaschi Siena 82 - 92 Alba Berlin

dashaun woodAlba Berlin stunned Montepaschi Siena 82-92 at the Palaestra on Friday in the visitors’ first Turkish Airlines Euroleague appearance in more than three years. At what is traditionally one of the toughest away venues in the Euroleague, the Berliners snapped a seven-game Euroleague losing streak by taking control of the game with a 0-11 run in the second quarter and using a 0-15 charge in the third to race to a 16-point lead and Siena never really threatened after that. DaShaun Wood led six Alba scorers in double figures with 15 points. Vule Avdalovic and Nihad Djedovic scored 14 apiece, Yassin Idbihi added 13 and Albert Miralles and Deon Thompson each scored 10. Besiktas JK Istanbul 81 - 65 Partizan mt:s

Besiktas JK Istanbul recorded its first-ever Turkish Airlines Euroleague victory by downing Partizan mt:s Belgrade 81-65 at Abdi Ipekci Sports Arena in Group D on Friday. An enthusiastic crowd allowed Besiktas to grab a win in its Euroleague debut. Patrick Christopher led the winners with 25 points on 5-of-6 three-point shooting. He had 21 in the second half. Curtis Jerrells added 15 for Besiktas. Vladimir Lucic led Partizan with 18 points while Leo Westermann added 12. A 10-1 run that Tutku Acik capped with a three-pointer gave Besiktas a 19-14 lead after 10 minutes. Read more here.

FC Barcelona Regal 72 - 60 Brose Baskets


pete mickealFC Barcelona Regal cruised to a 72-60 win over Brose Baskets Bamberg to start their Turkish Airlines Euroleague campaign Friday night at Palau Blaugrana. Spanish champs took control of the game early, jumped to a double-digit advantage with a 15-0 first quarter run and never looked back. Ante Tomic was a great inside presence for Barcelona with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks. Pete Mickeal also scored 12, Erazem Lorbek added 11 and C.J. Wallace had 10. Bostjan Nachbar scored Bamberg’s first 9 points in the game and finished with game-high 20 points, while Latavious Williams and Maik Zirbes added 8 apiece. Read more here.

moran rothMaccabi Electra Tel Aviv opened its 2012-13 season in style with an 80-85 road win over Unicaja Malaga behind an effective team effort on Thursday night at Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga, Spain. Five players scored between 9 and 16 points as Maccabi dished 16 assists compared to only 5 by the hosts. In his Turkish Airlines Euroleague debut, Ricky Hickman scored 16 points for Maccabi, including the final 2 from the charity stripe that sealed the win, and added 4 assists. David Logan added 14 points, Lior Eliyahu scored 13, Guy Pnini 11 and Giorgi Shermadini finished with 9 as Maccabi won its season opener on the road for the first time since 2004. Read more here.

Mapooro Cantu 71 - 84 Union Olimpija

jaka blazicUnion Olimpija won its first Turkish Airlines Euroleague season opener on the road in 10 years as the Ljubljana side beat Mapooro Cantu 84-71 to tip off Group B play. Olimpija finished the game on a 21-7 run with 4 three-pointers for its first opening road win since at Unicaja Malaga in 2002 - a streak of seven straight defeats. Aron Baynes collected 16 points and 12 rebounds, Dylan Page scored 17 points, Sasu Salin added 15 points and Jaka Blazic chipped in 12 for the winners, who will head home next week to face Fenerbahce Ulker. Cantu committed only 8 turnovers but shot just 38 percent and allowed Olimpija to shoot 55 percent for the game. Read more here.

Fenerbahce Ulker 92 - 80 BC Khimki MR

Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul registered its first win in the 2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague by downing BC Khimki Moscow Region 92-80 in front of 8,400 fans at Ulker Sports Arena in Group A on Thursday. Emir Preldzic paced the winners with 20 points. Bo McCalebb added 17, Omer Onan had 15, Romain Sato got 12 while Oguz Savas contributed 11 for Fenerbahce. Zoran Planinic led Khimki with 17 points. K.C. Rivers added 14, Aleksey Zhukanenko had 12, Kresimir Loncar 11 and Sergey Monya 10 for the guests. A wild three-pointer by Rivers tied the game, 25-25, after 10 minutes. Read more here.

Olympiacos Piraeus 85 - 81 Caja Laboral

martynas geceviciusTurkish Airlines Euroleague champion Olympiacos Piraeus opened its title defense by downing Caja Laboral of Spain 85-81 at home at the Peace and Friendship Stadium on Thursday. The Reds used couple of second-quarter runs to erase an early 20-28 deficit. Georgios Printezis scored 7 points in a 16-1 spurt that gave Olympiacos control of the game and Final Four MVP Vassilis Spanoulis and Stratos Perperoglou each hit a triple in 10-0 run to finish the first half. However, Maciej Lampe scored 14 of Caja Laboral’s 29 points in the third quarter enabling the visitors to come back from a double-digit deficit, but led by brilliant Spanoulis and with clutch triples from Pero Antic and Kostas Sloukas, Olympiacos held on for the victory. Elan Chalon 81 - 74 Asseco Prokom

Elan Chalon-Sur-Saone made its Turkish Airlines Euroleague debut a memorable one with an 81-74 victory over Polish champion Asseco Prokom Gdynia on Thursday evening. New signing Brion Rush led an 8-0 third-quarter run that put Chalon in control and the lead reached 14 early in the fourth quarter on a Shelden Williams basket. However Prokom battled on to make it close in the last few minutes. But the French champs did not wilt under the late pressure and Blake Schilb led the hosts to victory. Read more here.

Paulius Jankunas led the winners with 20 points. Ksistof Lavrinovic added 17, Marko Popovic had 15 and 5 assists and Oliver Lafayette tallied 10 points for Zalgiris. Mickael Gelabale led Cedevita with 16 points while Bracey Wright added 15. A jumper by Gelabale gave Cedevita its last lead, 13-14, midway through the first quarter. Ksistof Lavrinovic and Jankunas shined right after that to give Zalgiris a 27-20 margin after 10 minutes. Read more here.

CSKA Moscow 75 - 73 Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius


nenad krsticThe 2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague season started in thrilling fashion, with CSKA Moscow surviving a big scare from Lietuvos Rytas and pulling out dramatic 75-73 at Megasport Arena in the Russian capital on Thursday. Last season's runner-up looked to take control of the game with 15-5 run that opened the second quarter and CSKA held 9-point halftime lead, but Lietuvos Rytas used its defense to get back in the game after the break. With fourth quarter three-pointers from Nemanja Nedovic, Mindaugas Katelynas and Janis Blums, Rytas took the lead, but Sonny Weems came to CSKA's rescue with 6 points and a blocked shot in the final 69 seconds. October 10, 2012 - Stage set for the new 2012-13 season!

turkish airlines euroleagueThe 2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague regular season opens with great showdowns around the continent and all 24 teams facing a 10-game group stage in which the best four teams in each group will advance to an extended, more attractive Top 16 by mid-December. It all starts on a busy Thursday which features six games. The earliest one sees Zalgiris Kaunas hosting Cedevita Zagreb in Group C at 18:45 CET. Zalgiris coach Joan Plaza returns to the Euroleague to face his former boss, four-time Euroleague champ Bozidar Maljkovic. Also in Group C at 20:00 CET, reigning Euroleague champion Olympiacos Pireaus starts to defend its title against Caja Laboral. Also at 20:00 CET to open Group B, Elan Chalon-sur-Saone hosts its first-ever Euroleague game against Asseco Prokom Gdynia. Three more games are scheduled at 20:45 CET, two of them in Group A.
